WHAT ARE VOLTAGE SAGS AND MICRO-INTERRUPTIONS AND HOW CAN THEY BE DISTINGUISHED?
The two phenomena are often confused, but they have different characteristics and require different solutions.
VOLTAGE SAG: PARTIAL REDUCTION IN VOLTAGE
Drop between 10% and 90% of the nominal value, lasting between 10 ms and 1 minute (Reference standard: CEI EN 50160).
MICRO-INTERRUPTION: TOTAL VOLTAGE DROP
Voltage drops to zero for a very short time: typically between 50 and 500 ms. It is often not detected by standard monitoring systems, but it is more frequent than one might think.
THE MOST COMMON CAUSES AND THEIR IMPACT
The most frequent causes of this type of disturbance include:
- Start-up of large motors or loads in the same substation or nearby
- Faults and automatic reclosing operations on shared MV/LV distribution lines
- Switching operations on the public grid
- Weather events (lightning, ice on overhead lines)
- Disturbances generated by other industrial plants connected to the same delivery point
In general:
- Voltage sags occur due to the start-up of large electrical loads, faults on distribution lines or switching operations.
- Micro-interruptions often derive from transient events on the network or from disturbances on shared plants.
In both cases, the electricity supply may be formally compliant with current regulations while still causing production downtime. The issue is not the electricity supplier, but the sensitivity of modern equipment.
