THE CUSTOMER
The customer is an American multinational technology company that owns a data centre in South East Asia.
THE NEED
The customer requested isolation transformers with challenging technical specifications, which can be summarised as:
- Energy Efficiency (Efficiency >98%) for reduced operating costs
- Neutral connected directly to earth for stability and safety
- Double shield (or reinforced shield) to earth for protection against harmonics and lightning strikes
- Nomex insulation for increased safety
- Earthquake protection for increased safety in seismic areas
- Factory Acceptance Test (F.A.T.) to be carried out online
- A range of additional accessories for transformer maintenance and safety
OUR SOLUTION
Ortea, thanks to its capacity and experience, manufactured 12 isolation transformers (4 x 150 kVA Dyn11 K4 transformers and 8 x 75 kVA Dyn11 K4 transformers) that met all customer requirements. In particular:
- A low current density in the windings, the choice of using a grain-oriented core plate and a low induction value, together with the use of high quality materials and an optimised design, resulted in an efficiency of over 98%. The installation of transformers with these characteristics has also significantly reduced system operating noise and mechanical vibrations, contributing to a longer operating life and lower maintenance costs.
- The transformers supplied by Ortea include a key feature: the neutral connected directly to earth. This configuration stabilises the phase voltages in the secondary, minimising the effects of current imbalance. Thanks to this design choice, the customer was able to count on a more stable electrical system, minimising the risk of outages and improving the operational reliability of the data centre.
- Another essential aspect of the transformers supplied by Ortea is the double ground shield, which acts as a filter for high-frequency harmonics. This solution allowed the customer to avoid the transfer of disturbances between primary and secondary, thus protecting the delicate electronic systems in the data centre. Furthermore, in the event of external lightning strikes, the double shield helps to attenuate voltage pulses, providing an additional level of protection against possible overvoltages.
- To further increase the safety of the data centre, Ortea chose to equip the isolation transformers with Nomex insulation material. This material is known for its fire resistance, and its application in the supplied transformers minimised the risk of fire, a critical factor for the customer requiring business continuity in a highly secure environment.
- Situated in a highly earthquake-prone area of Southeast Asia, the data centre required solutions that would guarantee resistance to earthquakes. The transformers supplied by Ortea were equipped with seismic feet, offering effective protection against earthquakes, safeguarding the integrity of the power system and ensuring the continuity of operations even under extreme conditions.
- A key element of the project was the execution of the Factory Acceptance Test (F.A.T.) online with the customer. This allowed us to verify the performance of the transformers in real time and ensure that they met all required specifications. The success of the test confirmed the quality of the products supplied and fully met the customer’s expectations.
- The transformers supplied by Ortea were finally equipped with a series of accessories to further improve maintenance and operational safety, including Control Unit + PT100 probes, side fans, LED lamps and bimetal plate.
Ortea’s successful case study for the supply of isolation transformers for a data centre in South East Asia demonstrates the high quality and effectiveness of its solutions. With a focus on safety, energy efficiency and protection from external stress, Ortea provided a power supply system that fully met the customer’s requirements, ensuring optimal performance and a long service life.
