HOW TO COMPENSATE VOLTAGE SAG: A REAL CASE

The customer, a leading Italian plastics processing company active in various sectors, had multiple plant downtimes due to poor power quality supply from the grid, resulting in production and economic losses.

A POWER QUALITY ISSUE: VOLTAGE SAGS

In order to solve this situation, Ortea carried out an analysis of the plant and identified the main cause as the approximately 250 voltage sags the company’s electrical system was subjected to over the course of a year.

ORTEA SOLUTION

The proposed solution was to install an Oxygen voltage sag compensator.

The equipment supplied by Ortea is a 1000kVA Oxygen K with input voltage compensation of ±10% and voltage sags coverage up to -40% for 1 minute, equipped with input and output circuit breaker and manual bypass line with interlocked circuit breaker.

THE BENEFITS OF A VOLTAGE SAG COMPENSATOR

Considering the high number of voltage sags and the relative costs that the customer had to face each year, the technological solution offered by Ortea not only allows a return on investment in a very short time, but also a constant production flow.

A practical case such as this, in which Ortea enables its customer to improve power quality and at the same time avoid production downtimes and consequent financial losses, can be duplicated in various application sectors besides plastics, such as the electronics industry, food & beverage, steel mills, paper mills, petrochemicals, automotive, medical, pharmaceutical, data center etc.

ABOUT OXYGEN

Oxygen is characterised by its effective handling of voltage sags, ensuring a fast response (less than 3 milliseconds). The required energy is taken directly from the grid and current models can cover voltage dips of up to 50% of the nominal value.

Compensation is via IGBT static switches controlled by a microcontroller. The double conversion technology ensures isolation from mains disturbances and distortions and enables the construction of high-power machines.

The Oxygen K model is further equipped with input and output circuit breakers and a manual by-pass line, offering an even more complete solution.
